GST invoice generator for India

A GST tax invoice in India must show the supplier's GSTIN, a unique serial number, the place of supply, HSN or SAC codes, and the tax split as CGST plus SGST (or UTGST) for supplies within a state, or IGST for supplies between states. InvoiceKit fills in that split from the two state codes, prints the total in words, and lets you download a PDF. It is free, needs no signup, and your data stays in your browser.

  • No signup, no watermark
  • Stays in your browser: nothing uploaded
  • GST, VAT and sales-tax aware

How it works

  1. Country is preset

Tax name, rates, tax-ID label and document title follow local rules.

  2. Fill in both parties

Registration numbers are format-checked as you type where possible.

  3. Download the PDF

Check the result against the list below before you send it.

What an invoice in India must show

  • Supplier details. Name, address and 15-character GSTIN of the supplier.
  • Invoice number. A consecutive serial number unique for the financial year, up to 16 characters (letters, numbers, hyphen or slash).
  • Date of issue. The date the invoice is issued.
  • Recipient details. Name, address and GSTIN of a registered recipient. For an unregistered recipient, name and address are needed where the invoice value is ₹50,000 or more, along with the delivery address and state.
  • HSN or SAC code. The goods (HSN) or services (SAC) code. If your aggregate turnover in the previous financial year was above ₹5 crore, show 6 digits on all tax invoices; up to ₹5 crore, show 4 digits on B2B invoices (optional on invoices to unregistered buyers).
  • Description, quantity and unit. What was supplied, with quantity and unit for goods.
  • Taxable value. The total value and the taxable value after any discount or abatement.
  • Tax rate and amount. Rate and amount of each tax charged: CGST and SGST/UTGST, or IGST, plus any compensation cess.
  • Place of supply. The place of supply with the state name, which decides whether the supply is intra-state or inter-state.
  • Reverse charge. Whether tax is payable on reverse charge basis.
  • Signature. Signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised representative.

GST rates

RateApplies to
0%Nil-rated and exempt essentials, such as many fresh foods, and certain services.
5%Merit-rate goods and services, including many everyday items.
18%Standard rate for most goods and services, including most professional services.
40%Special rate for selected luxury and sin goods.

GSTIN format

Format: 15 characters: 2-digit state code, 10-character PAN, entity number, the letter Z, and a check character.

Example: 27ABCDE1234F1Z0 (illustrative only)

The first two digits are the state code of registration, such as 27 for Maharashtra or 29 for Karnataka. InvoiceKit checks the format and the check character, but it cannot confirm that a GSTIN is active; use the search taxpayer tool on the GST portal for that.

Intra-state vs inter-state supply

When the supplier's state and the place of supply are the same, the supply is intra-state and the GST rate is split equally between CGST (central) and SGST (state). In Union Territories without a legislature, such as Chandigarh or Ladakh, UTGST replaces SGST. An 18% supply therefore shows 9% CGST and 9% SGST or UTGST.

When the two differ, the supply is inter-state and the full rate is charged as IGST. InvoiceKit reads the state code from your GSTIN and the place of supply you choose, then applies the right split automatically. You can still change any rate yourself.

The GST rate structure from 22 September 2025

Following the 56th GST Council meeting, the main slabs became 0%, 5%, 18% and a special 40% rate, replacing the earlier 12% and 28% slabs for most items. A few goods, such as precious metals, keep their own special rates.

Rates depend on the exact HSN or SAC classification, so check the current rate notification for your item before you invoice. The rates shown here were last checked on 29 Oct 2026.

Tax invoice, bill of supply and amount in words

A registered supplier charging GST issues a document titled Tax Invoice. A composition taxpayer, or a supplier making only exempt supplies, issues a Bill of Supply instead and does not charge GST on it.

The total in words is not listed in Rule 46, but it is customary on Indian invoices and many buyers expect it, so InvoiceKit prints it in the Indian numbering system (lakh and crore).

Frequently asked questions

Does InvoiceKit generate GST e-invoices with an IRN?

No. InvoiceKit creates PDF invoices only and does not connect to the Invoice Registration Portal, so it cannot produce an IRN or signed QR code. If your aggregate turnover is above the e-invoicing threshold (₹5 crore at the time of checking), you must report B2B invoices through an IRP.

When should I charge IGST instead of CGST and SGST?

Charge IGST when the supplier's location and the place of supply are in different states or Union Territories, and on exports and supplies to SEZ units. Charge CGST plus SGST or UTGST when both are in the same state or UT.

Do I need a GSTIN to use this invoice generator?

No. If you are not registered for GST, leave the GSTIN blank and do not charge GST; the document will be titled Invoice rather than Tax Invoice.

Is a signature mandatory on a GST invoice?

Rule 46 requires a signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised representative. Electronically issued invoices are commonly accepted with a digital signature or a clear authorised signatory block.

Is this tax advice?

No. This page summarises official rules for general information. For your specific supplies, check the CBIC and GST portal guidance or speak to a chartered accountant or GST practitioner.

Information only, not tax or legal advice. Tax rules change and depend on your situation. Check the official source or a qualified accountant before relying on them. You are responsible for what your documents say.
