Tax invoice generator for Australia

An Australian tax invoice must state that it is a tax invoice, and show your identity and ABN, the date, what was sold with quantity and price, the GST amount, and how much of each sale is taxable. For sales of A$1,000 or more it must also show the buyer's identity or ABN. InvoiceKit adds GST at 10%, validates your ABN check digits and gives you a PDF, free and with no signup.

  • No signup, no watermark
  • Stays in your browser: nothing uploaded
  • GST, VAT and sales-tax aware

How it works

  1. Country is preset

Tax name, rates, tax-ID label and document title follow local rules.

  2. Fill in both parties

Registration numbers are format-checked as you type where possible.

  3. Download the PDF

Check the result against the list below before you send it.

What an invoice in Australia must show

  • The words Tax invoice. The document must be intended to be a tax invoice, and stating Tax invoice prominently is the clearest way to show it.
  • Seller's identity. Your name or business name.
  • Seller's ABN. Your 11-digit Australian Business Number.
  • Date of issue. The date the invoice is issued.
  • Items sold. A brief description of each item, including quantity (if applicable) and price.
  • GST amount. The GST amount payable, if any, either per item or in total.
  • Extent each sale is taxable. Where an invoice mixes taxable and GST-free items, show which items are taxable.
  • Buyer's identity or ABN (A$1,000+). For sales of A$1,000 or more, the buyer's identity or ABN.

GST rates

10%Most goods and services sold in Australia (taxable sales).

ABN format

Format: 11 digits, usually written 2-3-3-3, with a built-in check-digit formula.

Example: 51 824 753 556 (the ATO's published example)

InvoiceKit checks the ABN formula, but only ABN Lookup can confirm a number is current and registered for GST. A valid ABN alone does not mean the business is registered for GST.

When you must issue a tax invoice

If you are registered for GST, you must give a tax invoice within 28 days when a buyer asks for one for a taxable sale over A$82.50 including GST. Buyers need a valid tax invoice to claim GST credits, so most businesses send one automatically.

You must register for GST when your GST turnover is A$75,000 or more (A$150,000 for non-profits), or if you provide taxi or ride-sourcing services regardless of turnover. If you are not registered, issue an ordinary invoice and do not charge GST or call it a tax invoice.

Invoices with GST-free items

When one invoice covers both taxable and GST-free items, the invoice must make clear which items include GST. InvoiceKit lets you set 10% or 0% on each line and shows the GST total separately.

Frequently asked questions

Is an InvoiceKit invoice a valid tax invoice?

It can be, provided you are registered for GST and the invoice contains all the information the ATO lists. InvoiceKit shows each of those fields, but you are responsible for the details you enter.

When do I need the buyer's ABN on a tax invoice?

For taxable sales of A$1,000 or more, the tax invoice must show the buyer's identity or ABN. Below that, the buyer's details are optional.

Can I issue a tax invoice if I am not registered for GST?

No. Only GST-registered businesses can issue tax invoices or charge GST; others issue a plain invoice.

Does InvoiceKit support e-invoicing through Peppol?

No. InvoiceKit produces PDF invoices and does not send invoices through the Peppol network. If a customer requires Peppol e-invoices, you will need a Peppol-enabled provider.

Is this tax advice?

No. This page summarises ATO guidance for general information; check ato.gov.au or a registered tax agent for your situation.
