Invoice generator for New Zealand (GST)
Since 1 April 2023, New Zealand GST-registered businesses provide taxable supply information instead of a fixed tax invoice, and what you must show depends on the value of the sale: more details are needed above NZ$200 and again above NZ$1,000. InvoiceKit adds GST at 15%, includes your GST number and leaves room for the buyer details needed on larger sales. It is free, needs no signup and keeps everything in your browser.
- No signup, no watermark
- Stays in your browser: nothing uploaded
- GST, VAT and sales-tax aware

GST No. format
Format: 8 or 9 digits, usually the same as your IRD number, often written 123-456-789.
Example: 123-456-789 (illustrative only)
Your GST number is normally your IRD number. Only GST-registered businesses should show a GST number or charge GST.
Taxable supply information explained
The 2023 changes replaced the requirement to issue a document titled tax invoice with a requirement to keep and provide taxable supply information. The information can be spread across more than one record, such as an invoice plus a contract, and the words tax invoice are no longer mandatory, although many businesses still use them.
For supplies of NZ$200 or less, only the basics are needed. Over NZ$200 you add your GST number and the GST amount, and over NZ$1,000 you also identify the buyer. InvoiceKit titles the document Tax Invoice when you enter a GST number, which remains widely recognised.
Registration threshold
You must register for GST if your turnover in the last 12 months was NZ$60,000 or more, or is expected to reach that in the next 12 months. Below the threshold, registration is voluntary.
Correcting an invoice
If the price changes after you have invoiced, for example because of a refund, discount or return, you provide supply correction information instead of editing the original invoice. Commonly this is a credit note or debit note that refers to the original invoice and shows the change in price and GST.
Keep your records, including taxable supply information, for at least seven years, as IRD generally requires.

Frequently asked questions
Do I still need to call it a tax invoice?
No, not since 1 April 2023. The invoice needs to contain the right taxable supply information for its value, whatever it is called.
What buyer details are needed above NZ$1,000?
Where the buyer is GST-registered, their name and at least one identifier, such as a physical or postal address, phone number, email address, NZBN, trading name or website.
Are InvoiceKit invoices accepted by IRD?
IRD does not require a specific template. If your invoice includes the taxable supply information for its value, it meets the requirements; InvoiceKit gives you the fields to do that.
Can I show prices including GST?
Yes. For supplies over NZ$200 you can either show the GST amount or state that the total includes GST.
Is this tax advice?
No. This summarises IRD guidance for general information; check ird.govt.nz or a tax adviser for your situation.
