Invoice generator for Canada (GST/HST)

A Canadian invoice from a GST/HST registrant should show your business name, the date, the total, and, for larger sales, your GST/HST registration number, the tax charged and the buyer's name. The tax itself depends on the province of supply: 5% GST alone, a single HST of 13 to 15%, or GST plus a provincial sales tax such as PST or QST. Pick the province in InvoiceKit and it applies the matching rates; it is free, needs no account and keeps your data in your browser.

  • No signup, no watermark
  • Stays in your browser: nothing uploaded
  • GST, VAT and sales-tax aware

How it works

  1. Country is preset

Tax name, rates, tax-ID label and document title follow local rules.

  2. Fill in both parties

Registration numbers are format-checked as you type where possible.

  3. Download the PDF

Check the result against the list below before you send it.

What an invoice in Canada must show

  • Your business or trading name. Required on every invoice that supports a buyer's input tax credit claim.
  • Invoice date. The date of the invoice, or the date tax was paid or payable.
  • Total amount. The total paid or payable.
  • GST/HST registration number. Required where the invoice total is $100 or more.
  • Tax charged. For totals of $100 or more, the GST/HST charged, or the total with a statement that it includes GST/HST and the total tax rate, and which items are taxable at which rate.
  • Buyer's name. For sales of $500 or more, the buyer's name or trading name (or their authorised agent).
  • Description of supply. For sales of $500 or more, a description sufficient to identify each supply.
  • Terms of payment. For sales of $500 or more, the payment terms.
  • QST number (Quebec). Quebec registrants charging QST also show their QST registration number.

GST/HST No. format

Format: 9-digit Business Number (BN) followed by the program identifier RT and a 4-digit reference, such as RT0001.

Example: 123456789 RT0001 (illustrative only)

You can check a supplier's GST/HST number with the CRA GST/HST registry. Quebec QST numbers use a separate format ending in TQ, issued by Revenu Quebec.

Which rate applies: place of supply

GST/HST is charged based on where the supply is made, which for most goods is where they are delivered and for many services is where the buyer is located. A business in Alberta selling to a customer in Ontario may therefore need to charge 13% HST rather than 5% GST.

Provincial sales taxes such as BC PST, Manitoba RST and Saskatchewan PST are separate from GST and have their own registration rules. InvoiceKit shows each component as its own line so the tax breakdown is clear.

Small suppliers

If your taxable sales are $30,000 or less over four consecutive calendar quarters, you are generally a small supplier and do not have to register for GST/HST, although you may register voluntarily. If you are not registered, do not charge GST/HST or show a registration number on your invoice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to show my GST/HST number on every invoice?

The CRA requires it on invoices for sales of $100 or more so that registered buyers can claim input tax credits. Many businesses include it on every invoice for simplicity.

Should I charge GST or HST to a customer in another province?

Generally you charge the rate of the province where the supply is made, which is often the customer's province. Check the CRA place-of-supply rules for your type of goods or services.

Are invoices from InvoiceKit accepted by the CRA?

The CRA does not prescribe an invoice template; it lists the information an invoice must contain. If your InvoiceKit invoice shows that information, it can support an input tax credit claim.

What about sales to customers outside Canada?

Many exports of goods and services are zero-rated, meaning 0% GST/HST applies. Conditions apply, so check the CRA guidance before treating a sale as zero-rated.

Is this tax advice?

No. Rates were checked on 29 Oct 2026 and are provided for general information. Confirm your obligations with the CRA, Revenu Quebec or your provincial tax office.
